Building in the other direction

BarterX is a global software company in the making — focused, taste-driven, and allergic to interchangeable product. Here is how we think about what comes next.

For a long time, the web felt personal. Strange homepages, inside jokes, handwriting in the margins. Then the same layouts won. Retention, conversion, identical cards. The tools did not break — they smoothed into one voice.

Cheap generation made the next problem visible: when output is free, judgment becomes the product. Sameness is not only boring. It trains us to expect less from the screen.

What we believe

BarterX builds useful, intelligent, and beautifully authored software for a more thoughtful internet. That is the whole thesis.

  • Useful means a product earns the room it takes on someone’s day — not vanity metrics dressed as impact.
  • Intelligent means software that interprets and clarifies, without pretending life is simple.
  • Authored means a clear point of view. You should feel that a human made decisions about the details.

We are building in the other direction — against slop, against optimization without soul, against tools that shout louder instead of listening better.

What we are not

We are not a single-category bet. Surelee is one line of work: a calmer interface for what money means, not another dashboard theater. Curtainly is another: privacy for how people actually share screens. More will follow. The bar is the same even when the problem changes.

We are not asking permission to be taken seriously. We are asking you to judge the work.

Where this goes

AI can sharpen craft. It cannot replace taste. Our job is to ship software worth keeping after the novelty fades — calm where it helps, expressive where it matters, global in ambition without forgetting where we started.

If that sounds like the kind of internet you still want to use, you are the reader this journal is for.
